The Finnish company Finnforel, rearing trout, is going to invest $90 million in the farming factory of rainbow trout in Russia. If this project is carried out, it could become one of the largest one not only for Russia, but for Finland as well.

In November of this year Finnforel will start test production of rainbow trout in the Finnish city of Varkaus, the same production which the company plans to start in Russia.

The farm in Varkaus is designed to produce 1 thousand tons of fish a year. If the test is successful, the company will begin construction of trout growing farm in Russia, which is planned to breed 5 thousand tons of trout per year.

Investors consider sites for the farm construction in the Novgorod region. If the investors are satisfied, the contract can be signed in February 2018, the process of construction will last for a year, and production is scheduled to begin in February 2019.

After sanctions imposing, there is a shortage of fresh fish in Russia, at present this situation doesn’t change. But the company's success will depend on consumer ability of Russians and the pricing policy of Finnforel. According to the researchers of this market segment, consumers will actively buy fresh salmon, if it costs no more than 15 percent expensive than chicken meat and pork.

Today the market of salmon growing in Russia is represented by fisheries of Karelia (20 thousand tons per year) and Leningrad region (total capacity of 40 farms - 900 thousand tons).
