Next Wednesday on September 13, the European Parliament will work on changes in the pan-European program of land use and forestry, in particular, on the measures to reduce carbon emissions. These measures may affect the operation of the Finnish forest industry. The European Parliament wants to limit the logging volumes in Finland to the level of previous years. Everything, that will be cut in excess of this level, will be treated as a violation and fined.

Representatives of logging and wood business of Finland disagreed with the EU's plans in July of this year. Their arguments are as follows: in Finland logging is based on the accounting system of forests. This system allows to adjust the amount of cut trees and all forest resources in the country.

The second argument of the Finns, which is much stronger from a logical point of view, is that in recent years forestry and wood industry of Finland was in crisis and deforestation decreased. Based on the volumes of previous years in logging quotas, it will give a competitive advantage to other countries.
