After obtaining of drilling permit from the US government the icebreaker will go to Chukchee Sea. Works on oil extraction will be carrying out here together with the largest company in its industry – Shell.

The Fennica was rented from the Finnish company Arctia Shipping. Now the icebreaker is on repair, but after it’s done the Finnica will commence its duties immediately.

It is worth saying that the US government did not grant the drilling permit on the Arctic shelf to Shell before. The reason was discontentment of the Greenpeace activists. They were afraid of a possible major oil leak that could become an environmental disaster, affecting Russian waters and the nature reserve “Wrangel Island”. The icebreaker with 10-meter equipment to stop a possible well blowout was approved by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement of the US. On Monday the drilling permit beneath the sea bed was obtained.

Shell Company hopes to drill two exploration wells by late September.
