The introduction of Russian product embargo in response to the European economic sanctions and a low level of support from the EU led to a sharp decline in the profitability of farms in Finland. In 2015, the Finnish farmers have received a compensation in 2015, and the European Union has allocated 9 million EUR despite the fact that the agricultural sector in Finland losses amounted to about 400 million EUR.

The decision to strike is accepted by the Executive Council of the Federation of Agricultural Producers of Suomi as a response to difficulties in subsidizing the industry and opposition to mutual economic sanctions of Russia and European countries. During the strike, Finnish farmers are organizing a mass tractor march to Helsinki,. which will be held on March 11, 2016.
